Howard, Joseph Jr.’s son, left his architecture career to pursue his interest in painting and gardening full time. Howard had followed in his father’s footsteps and pursued a degree in architecture at Columbia University and a passion for the arts and horticulture. The Montclair Foundation provides grants bi-annually to a broad range of 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations working to improve our community. In Cypress Park on West Avenue 26, you’ll see pepper plants, roses, and unique mission architecture. In the 1950s, this park was a showcase for the Lawry Seasoning company. This garden features nearly five acres of jacaranda trees, pines, geraniums, yucca, roses, and oleander. Stop and smell the roses at Exposition Park right next to the USC Coliseum on State Drive in Southern Los Angeles. Howard Van Vleck’s influence on the gardens was immense, and the passion he poured into them is still visible today. His legacy includes unique hybrid varieties of rhododendrons that had not been seen previously, particularly a clear, yellow variety that is currently flowering in the garden — and just as magnificent as he hoped. The heirs of Howard Van Vleck gifted the house and grounds at 21 Van Vleck Street to The Montclair Foundation with a mission to support nonprofits.
